Dry baby scalp: What it is, Causes and Natural Home Remedies

Dry skin and cradle cap are common skin conditions that can affect infants. While they may have similar symptoms, they have different causes and require different treatment approaches.

How to identify a dry baby scalp

Dry skin, also known as xerosis, is a common condition that occurs when the skin lacks moisture.

It can be caused by a variety of factors, including cold weather, low humidity, and hot baths. Dry skin can appear flaky, rough, and itchy, and may be more prone to irritation and inflammation.

How to identify cradle cap

Cradle cap is a common skin condition that affects infants and is characterised by flaky, scaly patches on the scalp. It is thought to be caused by overactive oil glands, and is not caused by poor hygiene or a deficiency in nutrition. Cradle cap may also appear on the eyebrows, ears, and neck.

How to reduce the symptoms of cradle cap

Use regular oiling to help reduce cradle cap symptoms

To reduce the symptoms of cradle cap, here are ten things you can try:

  1. Gently brush the scalp with a soft brush or comb to loosen the scales.

  2. Wash your baby's hair with a gentle, pH-balanced shampoo.

  3. Apply a small amount of coconut oil to the scalp and gently massage it in (read more about the power of coconut oil on cradle cap here)

  4. Leave coconut oil on the scalp for at least an hour before washing it out.

  5. Use a baby-specific moisturising lotion on the scalp to help hydrate the skin.

  6. Avoid using products that contain harsh chemicals or fragrances, as these can irritate the skin. (Read more about why you should treat baby skin differently to adult skin here)

  7. Avoid over washing your baby's hair, as this can strip the scalp of its natural oils. However once cradle cap has built up, more frequent shampooing can help. Try using our Pebbl silicone bathtime scrub for gentle washing.

  8. Keep your baby's scalp clean and dry, as moisture can worsen cradle cap.

  9. Consult with a healthcare professional if the cradle cap persists or appears infected.

  10. Keep in mind that cradle cap is a temporary condition and nothing to worry about. It will typically resolve itself within a few months.

Dry skin and cradle cap should be treated with proper care and attention. By following the tips outlined above, you can help to reduce the symptoms of cradle cap and keep your baby's skin healthy and hydrated.
